Practical Tips to Avoid Getting Mud on your Carpet

Mud on the carpets?  An absolute nightmare for anyone in winter when everyone tries to enter the house with mud on their shoes.

There are many good tips on how to clean the mud off carpets but WHY should this be necessary?  It is, after all, much easier to prevent the mud from entering your house.

One way to reduce the amount of mud that enters your house is to close off a couple of entrances that are used on a rainy day so as to reduce the number of places where people and their pets can bring mud in.  Ideally, the entrance left open should lead into a room with an easy to wipe floor.

The best way to keep mud out though is to stop it entering the house at all and as it is usually brought in on the soles of people’s shoes, this practice can be eliminated by placing doormats at the entrance to the home, inside as well as out.  This will see people that come into the house first shifting off the dirt onto the mats before entering.   Doormats should be long enough for people to walk across with both feet before they enter the house.

Another way to prevent mud entering your house is to suggest that family members, friends and guests remove their shoes and leave it just outside the entrance.  A basket can be provided where people can leave their shoes. No need to be ashamed!

Pets that have access to the garden will also bring lots of mud in on their paws and coat and it is a good idea to keep a clean rag at the door when they are very dirty so that you can remember to wipe off their muddy wet claws and paws before they enter the house.
